Why Wood Carvers Who Skip Gloves Are Making a Mistake

whittling safety gloves

If you've been carving for any length of time, you've probably had the same thought: gloves slow me down. Maybe you tried a pair once, found them clunky, and tossed them in a drawer never to be seen again. We get it. That's actually one of the most common things we hear from carvers at every skill level.

But here's the thing — the right glove doesn't have to feel like a compromise.

That's exactly what the team at Woodcarving Illustrated found when they put our cut-resistant carving gloves to the test. Their verdict? Comfortable, breathable, and dexterous enough to handle small, detailed projects without getting in the way.

Dwayne Gosnell, a member of the Caricature Carvers of America, went as far as trying to damage the gloves on purpose to see what they could take. His conclusion: they held up impressively against the kinds of accidental slices that happen to even seasoned carvers. Fellow CCA member Bob Hershey noted the palm material provided a noticeably better grip on his carvings compared to other gloves he'd used — and that they stretched comfortably to fit his hand.

That last point matters more than people realize. Grip and fit are exactly what most carvers are worried about losing when they put on a glove. When those boxes are checked, there's really no reason not to wear one.

Here's the honest truth about carving injuries: they're rarely catastrophic in the moment, but they make a session much less enjoyable. A nick here, a slice there — eventually it can begin to detract from the cathartic nature of the hobby. For a beginner or first time carver, it might even turn them off from carving completely. A good pair of gloves is about making your experience fun and staying in the game for the long run.

Whether you're just getting started or you've been at this for decades, your hands are worth protecting. And if the gloves are comfortable enough that you forget you're wearing them? That's the whole ballgame.
