Bundle 1 - What Do I Need to Get Started?

Our most basic bundle comes with just that - the Professionally Sharpened 12pc Foundation Set and a Strop to maintain a razor sharp edge as you work on your first project. Beginners will be able to jump right in and begin carving.

(3) Add a carving mallet to your collection
Most carvers get a lot of use out of their carvers mallet. So while it's not a necessity to get started, you probably will want one. This is our most popular bundle for beginners. It comes with the Professionally Sharpened 12pc Foundation Set, the Strop, and a handy 12oz Carving Mallet. If you're just getting started, we recommend this bundle.
Bundle 3 - What Tools Can Wait Until Later?
(4) Diamond Sharpening Stone (or other method for re-sharpening your tools)

Eventually you will have to sharpen your tools, even if you get our Premium Pre-Sharpened Sets. It's a good idea to learn how to sharpen by hand before you move on to a mechanical technique, like a belt grinder. That's where our Double Sided Diamond Sharpening System comes into play.
If you don't want to wait, Bundle 3 has what you need to start caving, and continue carving for years to come.
There will also be a point, if you continue to carve, when you start working on more complicated projects. Fishtail gouges, for example, may one day come in handy. "My son, Aiden turned 4 years old in August and out grew his Winnie the Pooh themed bedroom, so we went the superhero route.
I carved him Avengers comic signs out of wood. Needless to say, it snowballed from there. That's basically how I got started.

"You won't hear of a wood carving story similar to this one...
I decided to make a totem pole from a large cedar tree that was uprooted by a storm. I cut out a 12 ft section, enough to make a substantial totem pole, and did 3 things:
1. I enlisted four of my grandchildren, all under 10 years old in the project.
2. I sent for Schaaf Tools top of the line carving tools.
3. I ordered a book, entitled, How to Carve Your Own Totem Pole.
What could go wrong?
My grandchildren have really enjoyed this project and we are making great progress. We followed traditional concepts used by Native American carvers.
The top figure is a common rendition of a Thunderbird (always the top figure). My granddaughter found the design for the second figure, an Owl, from the famous totem pole, which has stood in Pioneer Square, Seattle, for 80 years. And the last figure follows the common rendition of a Bear, protruding tongue and holding a trout.
This experience has not only allowed me and my grandchildren to be creative together. But it has also given us the togetherness and quality time we all crave. Especially with those who we love dearly.
